Gabriela Arteaga

Gabriela Arteaga is a Ph.D. student at North Carolina State University, at the Food, Bioprocessing, and Nutrition Sciences Department. Originally from Querétaro City in Mexico, she holds a Masters in Food Science by Texas Tech University, where she worked for the International Center for Food Industry Excellence, focusing on Produce Safety, Preventive Controls for Human Food, and FDA's Food Safety Modernization Act.

Consulting for the development of microbial and environmental baselines and profiles in produce processing and packaging facilities, together with extension activities and technical assistance for personnel training, in North and Central America are the main areas of Gabriela’s expertise, with skills for food safety training and evaluation tools and workshops, in English and Spanish. 

​

Gabriela has expertise on food safety and agriculture public policy, with experience working for the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture, as well as for the US House of Representatives, at the House Committee on Agriculture, in Washington D.C.

​

She has been recognized and certified by the Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance as a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual, by the 3A Sanitary Standards Inc., the Food Marketing Institute, the Grocery Manufacturing Association, the Safe Quality Food (SQF) Institute, ServSafe, and Texas Tech University HACCP Certificate.

Gabriela also played a vital role for the development and logistics of the recognized Meat School en Español® 2015-2016, where a learning and hands-on experience, regarding the latest trends in value addition, quality and safety in the processing of meat and meat products, is offered to 60+ international participants every year, in Texas Tech University.

She is currently working on defining best practices for Food Safety Extension and Education Activities and preparing to become a Food Safety Extension Specialist. Gabriela’s work in Food Safety Education includes Blended and Adaptive Learning, and skills development in food industry personnel through effective training. She believes that a deeper development of skills, together with a better understanding of the requirements from regulatory agencies, and support through science-based information and technical assistance for food producers, will protect public health and offer a safer food supply domestically and internationally.
